Trump Opposes United and American Merger, Supports Spirit

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed opposition to a potential merger between United Airlines and American Airlines, stating that the deal would reduce competition in the aviation sector and lead to higher prices. In an interview with CNBC, Trump said he supports those looking to buy Spirit Airlines, but does not want United and American to merge.
Competition experts warn that such a merger would result in the combined companies controlling 40% of the market, which would not be favorable for consumers. Trump emphasized that the lack of support for the merger would present a significant obstacle.
In 2024, the Joe Biden administration blocked JetBlue Airways’ proposed acquisition of low-cost carrier Spirit, arguing that it would increase ticket prices and eliminate competition. However, Spirit’s financial situation has worsened, and rising fuel prices have further strained the low-cost airline sector.
Spirit and other low-cost carriers are seeking temporary tax relief from Washington, warning that sustained high fuel prices could force them to raise fares and fees. Trump said, “This is 14,000 jobs, maybe the federal government should help with this.”
